| Phormium
tenax “Bronze Warrior”
Four years ago we were approached by a number of
nurseries to produce named Phormium varieties for them.
In addition to the named varieties we were also
supplied a P.tenax seedling that had been selected for
its colour and growth form. As we were growing all of these plants
in our nursery, the growth and vigour of the seedling was far superior
to the named varieties. While we had a lot of trouble controlling
red spider mite on the named varieties, we did not see any on this
plant. When we had a heat wave in Brisbane in January two years
ago, we lost all of them except for this seedling which showed little
deleterious effects from the heat. 
We decided to name it Bronze Warrior and are releasing
it in Australia, exclusively through Avondale and Benara Nurseries.
- More vigorous in growth habits.
- Better suckering.
- Good red spider resistance compared to other Phormium varieties.
- As you can see by these photos the lovely rich bronze colour
to the foliage looks spectacular when multiple planted or just
on its own.
- The colour of the foliage also compliments other plants when
planted as a landscape feature.
